whitney hs: school of dreams?

Huh. I came across this book today. It’s a book that’s being written about my high school. So weird. I might have to buy it so I can see if the author’s observations match up to my own memories of the Whitney High School experience. Reading the summary about the book made me laugh though — “What does a top public school look like? In the case of Whitney High, it’s a ramshackle campus in an unfashionable part of L.A., where the budgets are tight and the student body resembles a mini United Nations… But attending a dream high school carries a toll: high-achieving, high-pressured kids survive on espresso and four hours’ sleep and fall into despair if they get a B. Forget Generation X. This is Generation Stressed.” BWAH! So true. The campus really was awful — it was tiny, the carpeting sucked, the lockers were a hideous orange color, and until just a few years ago, we didn’t have a gym (of course, it was built after I graduated). And I believe there’s still no football team. As for the stressful environment, I can definitely attest to that. I think the school in itself was hyped up so much that we all thought we needed to live up to the reputation. Not to mention the pressure coming from parents, teachers, and even each other. It definitely was not a typical high school experience. But I have to admit that I kinda miss it. Good times, good times. I do have to say that I take a little bit of offense that Cerritos is considered “unfashionable.” It’s not *that* bad. Humph.

Time for the Friday Five:

What brand of toothpaste do you use?
Colgate. The Winterfresh flavor, with the green and white stripes. 😀

What brand of toilet paper do you prefer?
Eh… what?! Well, if I must… I like Quilted Northern.

What brand(s) of shoes do you wear?
Let’s see… I tend to buy Nine West and Kenneth Cole for my dressier shoes while I like Diesel and Steve Madden for my sneakers and casual shoes.

What brand of soda do you drink?
I like Coke, Sprite and Mountain Dew.

What brand of gum do you chew?
Wrigley’s Doublemint is it for me!

Ok, off to bed — only a half day of work for me tomorrow! 9am-noon, baby! AND it’s a 3-day weekend. Woohoo!

  1. My school doesn’t have a football team either. Although, I think it’s much more common here than in the states. We definately do not have a highschool experience anything like the movies or TV. It’s MUCH different here. I’ve never been to a "pep-rally", no one goes to watch many of the sports teams, we don’t have cheerleaders or football teams (at least at my school, but most don’t). It’s just very different. That’s pretty cool that there’s a book being written about your old school though!

  2. Hee! A book about your school? Your high school? Now that’s funny, but it looks great! Even I want to read it now.

  3. weird- i’m reading second helpings right now too. haven’t gotten too far. should go read instead of sitting online;) and what do ya know- we both happen to be quilted northern gals;) enjoy your three-day weekend kel. i know i will be:)

  4. Wow, thats cool!! Did you know my high school, University High School, was on MTV: True Life: I’m Going to Prom!! Yep! When you see Lisa (SGA President) at the girls flag football team I’m in there somewhere. My friend who lived in Tampa saw it and heard me yelling "GO COUGARS!" and she was like "That’s so Stephanie! I know that voice!" 😀 haha

  5. Kel, are you still capping DC? Because I’m looking for a bunch of good caps of the scene from "Beauty Contest" where Pacey is William Wallace. I figured you’d be the person to ask 😉 THANKS!
