My sides hurt *so* much from all the laughing I did while watching American Idol… holy crap. There were some horrible auditions. Sometimes I wonder if I these people intentionally go into the audition and sing horribly to get on TV. I mean, really… they have to know they can’t sing. Right?!

Sadly, there really weren’t that many contestants that I actually remember because of their talent — I can only think of 3 people, actually. Marlea (21, single mother who just broke up with her fiance), Travis (dancer) and Anwar (Milli Vanilli look-alike). Too bad I wasn’t particularly blown away by any of them. The real standouts of the night were the ones who didn’t make it to Hollywood. The most memorable ones were definitely Derek Braxton and Mary Roach. *dies* Could Derek be any more full of himself? And what was with the attitude? Jeebus. I don’t think there are words for Mary… her whole audition was a train wreck. The voice, the unfortunate fitting pants and the general craziness. Eeep.

Anyway, I think Mark McGrath is hot. I wish he was a permanent judge.

Did anyone happen to catch last night’s Everwood? My TV or the cable (not sure which) cut out during the final Ephram/Amy scene so I didn’t get to see or hear what they talked about. Can anyone fill me in? Pretty please?

So I have another New Year’s resolution to add to my list… I’m gonna start reading more often (Keenai is my inspiration). I was quite the bookworm back in the day. But after college, the number of books I’ve read per year is pretty embarassing. And I want to remedy that. I’ve just started reading the Fearless series by Francine Pascal (Sweet Valley High!), which is actually really intriguing and suspenseful. It’s a young adult series but the themes and storylines are much heavier and intense than anything you’d expect. Many MANY thanks to Zinna for letting me borrow her books. She’s so awesome!

Aside from the first 4 Fearless books, I just finished reading Almost Paradise by Susan Isaacs which my best friend loaned to me. OMG. I *loved* this book. It traces the two main characters back to their great-grandparents and then continues through their childhoods and ultimately to their first meeting and eventual marriage. I didn’t want to put it down — it’s that engaging. You’ll ache for the characters and you will definitely cry. It’s not a “happily ever after” book by any means. Two thumbs up.

That said, anyone have any book recs for me? I tend to read chick lit (ie. Bridget Jones, Shopaholic series) but I’m seriously open to anything…

  1. Oooh, beautiful new layout! I love that picture too! Oh, and a belated happy birthday to e-l.net! That’s pretty cool. I’m only about halfway finished watching my Everwood tape, but I’ll fill you in when I finish. 😉

  2. I’m happy you liked the book, I’m totally in love with it too. It tore my heart to pieces yet I couldn’t get enough.

I don’t normally watch Everwood, but lucky for you, Noel wouldn’t change the channel to let me watch the Laker game. They lost anyway, so I suppose Everwood was the better pick. Ok, so Amy apologizes to Efram because she knows that he never asked her to give up anything and that it wasn’t his fault. However, since they still have a semester left in school, she wants to get involved in activities again and they’re both going to have to compromise, not just her. Ephram was totally receptive to it and now they’re all good. I’m sure someone else can fill in details if I left anything out.

  3. Books:
    – I capture the castle by dodie smith
    – Sloppy firsts and second helpings by Megan McCafferty (did you read these? dont remember)
    – The secret life of bees by Sue Monk Kid
    – Behaving like adults by Anna Maxted (chicklit writer. will read more of her myself)
    – books by Mike Gayle (lad-lit, which is pretty much like chicklit)
    – Jemima J by Jane Green
    – books by Lisa Jewell (also chicklit)
    – Olivia Joules and the overactive Imagination by Helen Fielding
    – Can you keep a secret? by Sophie Kinsella
    – books by Marian Keyes
    – books by Josie Loyd & Emlyn Rees (couple who write books together. also chicklit)
    – the lovely bones by Alice Sebold
    – the bell jar by Sylvia Plath
    – Northern lights by Philip Pullman

Hope there are some suggestions in there.

  4. Do my eyes deceive, a pretty new layout for e-l.net?! 😉 Hee! Only kidding of course. I do love the new layout though. I am still so in love with the pictures from that pretty summer-y promotion. So squee! And a happy belated birthday to e-l.net! 🙂

  5. Hey Kel.

Some amazing books for you to check out:

East of Eden – John Steinbeck

The Kite Runner – Khaled Hosseini

Memoirs of a Geisha – Arthur Golden

Flowers for Algernon – Daniel Keyes

They aren’t exactly ‘Chick-Lit’ but they are Excellent (with a capital E) and I think you would love them. I work in a bookstore and read as much as I can and these are my favourites. 🙂

  6. Fearless kicks so much ass. I stopped reading at the 26th book (I thought it was the perfect way to end the series, and I don’t trust the writers past that. I know. But I still watch TV shows that disappoint me. I don’t understand it either.) Anyway, it gets a little slow around books 14 – 17, but then it picks back up. Good times.

  7. Kel, LOVELY new layout!!! SOrry I haven’t commented in awhile. It looks great.

Book recs: Try Luscious Lemon by Heather Swain. It’s chick lit but it is amazing. It’s so poignant, definitely a bar above the rest of some of the chick lit published today.

Got my DVDs from you too. Still can’t thank you enough.

  8. Ooh reading! I luff reading 😀 You should try out some Jane Austen especially Mansfield Park and Pride & Prejudice. Nora Roberts is also excellent 🙂
