birthday wrap-up

Many, many thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes! It was so nice to get phone calls, emails, comments and shout-outs from you all. I still have a huge smile on my face thinking of all the sweet greetings.

I had a fantastic day and weekend, for that matter. My best friend Robyn was in town and I had a blast hanging out with her. I don’t see her that often cause she lives in Southern California so it’s always a good time when we get together, hehe. She arrived on Thursday night and we caught up on some TV — The Apprentice (we couldn’t believe Pamela was fired; it should have been Stacy), Joey (Joey performing the Shakespeare monologue followed by the cowboy dancing was hilarious), and Smallville (poor, poor Chloe but I have to say that Clark and Lois were really cute in the final scene).

We woke up early on Friday morning (pretty much unheard of for me) because Rob cooked us breakfast! Yum, I love the perks of having a guest. We then proceeded to spend the next 2 days eating (go to Swan Oyster Depot if you like fresh seafood), shopping (we hit the Haight Street and Chestnut Street shopping neighborhoods in the city), and running around trying all the exhibits at the Exploratorium (*so* fun). Phew. We woke up really early each day and stayed up late so on Sunday after Robyn left (*sniff*), I spent a good part of the day sleeping. Ahhh, it felt so good.

So today on my actual birthday I didn’t really do anything special… Rob’s car had a flat tire so we took it to the shop and while we waited for it to get fixed, we walked around at Cal. I know I spent 4 years there but I can never quite get over how gorgeous and inspiring the campus is. We took along the camera so we snapped a bunch of shots that I hope I’ll be able upload — just so that you can all see what I’m talking about. We didn’t do much else — went shopping so I could continue the search for a pair of boots (I ended up really wanting a pair of Uggs — I used to hate the trendiness of them but now I think they’re kinda cute, heh) and also so I could admire an audio system that I want for my iPod (I think Rob’s going to get it for me — squee, I’m so spoiled!). Tnen we went to dinner, had the most amazing chocolate raspberry truffle cake (I don’t even want to think about how many calories I consumed this past weekend), and even made it home to catch Everwood.

All in all, I’m so happy. I had a great few days… though I’m still in denial about turning 25. Eek.

😉

dvds and 4-day weekend

Squee! I have a 4-day weekend ahead of me.

My best friend is visiting so I managed to score two days off. We’re going to catch up, hang out, do some shopping, go out to dinner… it’s going to be a great weekend!

I also got my Dawson’s Creek season 4 and Roswell season 2 DVDs today. Amazon rocks. They shipped yesterday and I got them today! And I even chose the free shipping! They must love me. Or you know, the warehouse is nearby.

Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

😀

nip/tuck s2 finale

I’m a day late but… OMG. The Nip/Tuck season finale? Freaking amazing. I actually haven’t watched the show in quite a few weeks (I always seem to forget when it’s on, hee) but I happened to see a commercial for it so I tuned in. %$#@! I’m still in shock.

— Nooooo!!!! The Carver attacked Christian! Sniffle. I seriously wanted to throw things at the TV. Hasn’t Christian been through enough?! And then when the single tear slid down his face… GUH. I *hurt* for him.

— Totally didn’t see the “Ava is a man” storyline coming.

— Poor, poor Adrian. I thought he was going to stab his mom and then he ends up stabbing himself! I know that his character was around to better elaborate why Ava was such a manipulative/predatory person but I really wish that the writers had explored him a bit more. Learning about Adrian was my favorite part of the whole Ava/Matt/Adrian storyline. And now he’s gone!

— I’ve never felt sympathy for Ava before but when she was holding Adrian in her arms… so, so sad.

— Who the heck is The Carver?! Also? The Carver mask scares the crap out of me.

I believe season 3 is slated to air in 8 months. 8 MONTHS! How am I supposed to wait that long to find out what happened to Christian? And how is Sean going to react when he finds out Christian was attacked? ARGH. I need answers, people.

spyware sucks

OMG. I hate spyware.

I was trying to look for Jamie Cullum lyrics on some site and then… BAM! Pop-up after pop-up after pop-up… and then something seemed to be downloading onto my computer and I couldn’t stop it! ARGH. $#@! Stupid lyrics site. I’ve run both Adaware and Spybot and the weird toolbars/unwanted programs seem to have gone away but I still have the occasional pop-up. Anyone know what else I can do?

Spyware sucks. Thank goodness my laptop is still safe from evil. For now.

I spent the entire weekend watching my West Wing season 1 DVDs. *sigh* So good. I watched 19 episodes in 2 days! I’m a little pissed though because the 4th disc doesn’t work. Grr. I wanted to check out the special features but when I put the disc into my DVD player, it made a really weird noise and then “No Disc” appeared on the screen. I tried to play the disc on my laptop as well but the same thing happened. Fabulous. Now I have to package the darn thing and mail it back to Deep Discount DVD, which is kind of a pain. I’ll have to wait another week or so to get the replacement set. I guess this is why I should just buy my DVDs from a normal brick and mortar store. No waiting.

I also managed to watch the series premiere of Desperate Housewives on Sunday night and I really, really liked it. Great, another TV show to watch regularly. Heh. I read that it did well in the ratings — if the ratings stay consistent or get better, I wonder what’s going to happen come January when Alias is slated to return to the timeslot? Will they move one of the shows to a different timeslot? Should be interesting.

dc s4 dvds

Squee! Dawson’s Creek season 4 DVDs on Tuesday!

😀

But I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t do some complaining… about the music changes, of course. Here’s the comprehensive list of replacement songs for the DVD release…

— The song I’m most depressed about losing is David Gray’s This Year’s Love. It was played over the final Pacey/Joey scene in the season premiere, which is one of my most favorite moments of the show. Ever. Sniffle. That song, to me, was like the theme for Pacey and Joey’s relationship in this season… *sigh*

Superman didn’t make the cut in 402. They messed with another one of my favorite Pacey/Joey scenes! * shakes fist*

— Yes! Never Saw Blue Like That in 403 is intact. Phew. I’ve always loved the way this song gave the Dawson/Pacey scene a hopeful tone.

Crazy For This Girl in 408 is gone, which is so bizarre to me because the song is on the official soundtrack (Volume 2). I guess they didn’t get clearance for the DVDs when that deal was inked. *shrugs*

— I have to say that I’m not all that sad to see that Takes My Breath Away was replaced in 414. I know that it’s played over a particularly significant Pacey/Joey scene but… I just wasn’t all that crazy about the song itself. I’m interested to hear the replacement.

— Bye bye to In the Sun from 416. This song introduced me to Joseph Arthur so I’m sad to see it go.

— I’m in shock (SHOCK, I tell you!) that Sweet Jane has been replaced in 418. Jen and Dr. Frost talk about the song in the first act so when it plays during the montage at the end, it serves as kind of a nice bookend to the episode. GUH.

— Another disappointment. No more Waiting For My Real Life To Begin in 421. This is from my second favorite Dawson/Joey scene of the season (the first being their scene together in Self-Reliance). Bah. It’s like all my favorites — gone!

— Well, at least they kept Fields Of Gold in 422. That’s a plus.

ARGH. I’m so conflicted. I love having DC on DVD but it’s not the same knowing that they’re not the “original” episodes.

october already

Another month gone by. Time is flying… I love October, though because it means my BIRTHDAY is coming soon. And Sarah’s too, I do believe. Hehe, yay.

This past week has been pretty sucky.

I’ve had this permanent headache all week long and nothing I do (taking aspirin, trying to get more sleep) will make it go away. UGH.

Add to that the fact that it has been absolutely insane at work this entire week because the Vice President of my company has been in town. It’s like my workload has tripled with him around.

AND I just found out today that my office has to move to our corporate office in Oakland by the end of October. Just thinking about that makes my head feel worse. I currently work in a small satellite office in San Francisco — it’s gorgeous and right in the heart of the financial district next to great food and fantastic shopping. And I love it so much! And I don’t want to give it up! I’ve known that we would have to move for some time now but my boss thought that our company would give us until the end of the year. It makes me depressed. I love working in the city. *sigh* The only positive is that it makes my commute much, much shorter. About 15-20 minutes instead of the hour that it is now. I can sleep later, which will be a good thing.

Anyway. My weekend is looking bright because I got my West Wing season 1 DVDs today! Very, very happy because the tapes I made from the Bravo reruns are getting worn out. I’m going to have myself a little marathon.

Happy Friday everyone! 🙂

more tv commentary… and a meme

I *really* enjoy looking at the GAP website. Why, you ask?

Reason #1 — Michael Vartan.
Reason #2 — Josh Duhamel.

YUM.

Anyway, watched a few more premieres so a few more TV thoughts (may contain spoilers)…

CSI
I’m a little bummed because I got home too late and missed the first half of the premiere. Grrr. From what I saw, it seemed like there were too many cases going on (4, if I remember correctly) so the storylines weren’t as in-depth as they normally are. However, seeing Greg in the field was cool and I really loved seeing Reiko Aylesworth as the replacement lab tech. Too bad she quit already! Reiko would have been a great cast addition. Glad the show is back though — as if I don’t watch enough CSI with the daily reruns on SpikeTV… hehe.

American Dreams
Stellar premiere. Meg and Rox’s skirt protest rocked and JJ’s phone call home seriously hurt my heart. Guh. Is it sad that I totally want JJ and Beth to be together? I believe they still love each other but they’re both too stubborn to admit it. And I’m totally worried about this relationship he’s forming with the Vietnamese caretaker/nurse at the hospital — it’s such an intimate situation that they’re in right now. Sniffle. I want JJ and Beth to work things out.

a gymnastics plea

I know I promised not to talk about gymnastics until next year but… I have a plea. A really great person over at TWoP sent me tapes of the 96 Olympics and I spent ALL DAY watching them. It was so great to see the Magnificent 7 win the gold. Squee! My most favorite gymnastics moment EVER. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone out there had any earlier meets (specifically 92 Olympics, 93/94/95 Worlds) that they’d be willing to tape for me? I’m in a total gymnastics phase right now and I’m desperate!

🙂
In other news, Rob and I have a new Tivo in our room. SCORE.

new TV

Watched lots of new TV these past few days… a (very) quick rundown with minor spoilers for the episodes…

Gilmore Girls
Lorelai and Rory are upset with each other, Emily and Richard are separated… it’s all so depressing. There were a few bright spots in the episode though — Lane and her whispering about sex was awesome and Luke’s multiple phone messages for Lorelai were OMGSOCUTE. I don’t even want to talk about Rory because she totally pained me (even if she had the most fabulous Marc Jacobs handbag). Although I have to say that I *am* a Rory/Dean shipper and this whole affair storyline kind of intrigues me (in a weird, twisted way). I’m looking forward to next week.

One Tree Hill
Ahhhh, the WB’s guilty pleasure is back. My favorite part of the episode was the revelation that Lucas thought Nathan was a reason to return to Tree Hill. Aww. Aside from that, Nathan/Haley are still as cute as ever (aside from that whole marriage thing), Jake’s still gone, and Brooke/Peyton are still pretending to be friends. Oh, and Haley has rocking parents. Good times.

Lost
I guess I’m a total and complete sucker for JJ Abrams cause I thought this was a really cool show. Good storyline, pacing, acting, suspense, music — all there. Plus, Merry! Charlie Salinger! Tess! Kendall! Weiss! And Hamilton! It’s like a fandom explosion, hehe.

Smallville
LOVED it. I haven’t *loved* an episode of Smallville in a long time so this is HUGE, people! I especially loved the 2 new cast additions. Erica Durance plays Lois with a lot of personality and I totally smiled when she said that she prefers nerds with glasses. Hee! And Jensen Ackles… is a hottie. YUM. Lana is one lucky lady, heh. I’m a Lana apologist so I’m glad she’s showing a little more spunk — plus, Kristin Kreuk actually seems to be enjoying herself. I don’t know what’s going on with her storyline, though. That was weird. I’m sad that Allison Mack seems to be missing from the opening credits (or did I happen to blink?) but yay for Jensen making the cut! That means we’ll be seeing more of him. Fantastic.

CSI: NY
A decent spin-off (Las Vegas is still best, of course). I’d rank it better than Miami (with the added bonus of no David Caruso!) but the cast didn’t grip me in any way, the sets had no personality, and it was shot way too dark. I don’t know if I’ll watch it regularly — maybe if I don’t have anything better to do.

Tired now. Off to bed. 🙂

shannen doherty

My 90210 fangirl was happy tonight as I watched North Shore (quite possibly the worst show I have ever forced myself to watch) — Shannen Doherty is back! And she’s bitchy! And manipulative! Just like Brenda!

I loved when she first stepped out of the car and said “Beats the hell out of Beverly Hills.” So cheesy yet so awesome.

The show will still get cancelled, though. That’s for sure.
