v for vendetta

Did some movie-watching this past weekend…

Pride and Prejudice
OMG. As you all predicted, I *adored* this movie. Just everything about it. It’s one of my most favorite stories and I just love seeing the romance between Lizzie and Mr. Darcy unfold on screen. Keira Knightley was incredible. I’ve always enjoyed her but she was particularly radiant in this movie. She definitely deserved her Oscar nomination! And Matthew McFayden was amazing. I didn’t think I could love a Mr. Darcy like I love Colin Firth but it happened. Highly recommended.

V For Vendetta
Another really great movie. It was visually stimulating and thought-provoking. At first I had a problem believing in V because he wears the Guy Fawkes mask for the entire movie. But Hugo Weaving is so phenomenal that you forget about it and focus on his words and actions instead. Natalie Portman also delivers what might be her best performance to date. She *owned* this movie. Without her in the role of Evey, I don’t know if V’s character and ideals would have come across as sympathetic as they did. This is definitely one of those movies that you either love or hate.

lazy

It’s been so cold here lately (like, unbelievably FREEZING) that I’ve been much too lazy to update my blog. I spent the entire weekend wrapped up in my goose down comforter and watching The Island. Not a completely horrible movie but not particularly good either. Or maybe I was so disappointed with the ending that it’s completely clouded my judgment. Ewan McGregor was great, though. As per usual. Up next on zee Netflix queue — Elizabethtown. Hey, I have a soft spot for Kirsten Dunst and awesome soundtracks.

OMG. I just finished watching tonight’s episode of 24.

hp gof dvd

Picked up the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire DVD! WHEE. There’s so many great special features that I’ve only had the chance to watch the following:

Deleted Scenes
I’m a sucker for trio scenes so the deleted scenes were great — specifically this scene by the fireplace and this scene on the school grounds (look at how cute they are with their scarves!).

Interviews with the Cast
I never realized how shy Rupert was in interviews. It’s so cute how hesitant and reserved he is when answering questions. Dan and Emma, on the other hand, are enthusiastic and eloquent. They really are a lot like characters in some ways. Some interesting tidbits — Dan has a crush on Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, Dan is looking forward to doing the kissing scene with Cho Chang in the OotP, and Emma reveals that she had such a hard time getting through the scene in CoS where she runs through the Great Hall to hug Dan that they had to freeze the hug by a few seconds when editing the movie because all the takes were too short (aww!).

Preparing the Yule Ball
This feature totally made me smile! I loved seeing the kids all dressed up but seeing them practice the dance choreography was golden. 😀 And poor Dan. Both he and Mike Newell commented on his absolute lack of dancing abilities. Heh. But my favorite part was when various people were talking about Hermione’s big entrance down the stairs and Dan said “Emma was never ugly, she’s always been quite beautiful, so I was kinda like you’re just even more beautiful.” LOVE. It must be my Harry/Hermione love turning itself into Dan/Emma shippiness. 😛

Anyway, Project Runway (spoiler)!

oscars 2006

OSCARS!!!

A few thoughts from the show…

The opening bit was really funny with Billy Crystal and Chris Rock in the Brokeback tent.

So much George Clooney love! I’m glad he won Best Supporting Actor… just because I lurve him. He gave my favorite acceptance speech of the night. I’m listening to his post-show interviews as I’m typing this and he just said that he blew the Batman franchise. Heh. True. I love that he doesn’t take himself so seriously that he can admit that.

Aww, I really wanted Michelle Williams to win Best Supporting Actress — if only to see a Creeker win an Oscar! And it was so cute to see Busy Phillips sitting next to her. They’re BESTFRIENDS4EVA.

PANTS EQUALITY FOR ALL! Hehe. That made me want to see Chicken Little.

Dolly Parton looks scary. Her boobs are like ten times bigger than her waist. EEEK. :/

What is Charlize wearing? That dress is unfortunate. The big bow is *awful.*

I totally want one of those stuffed penguins.

Three 6 Mafia winning Best Song for It’s Hard Out Here For a Pimp was one of the BEST Oscar moments. EVER.

Jon Stewart was a great host. I loved when he was giggling about Three 6 Mafia. I especially loved this joke:
Martin Scorsese – 0 Oscars
Three 6 Mafia – 1
BWAH.

Yay Reese! Another great acceptance speech. There’s just something about her that I find so charming and likable.

Wow, Crash won. Huh. It was a good movie but I didn’t really like it. Now, Brokeback Mountain I loved. I seriously thought it was going to win. That was a big upset.

Favorite Oscar dresses this year: Michelle Williams, Jessica Alba, and Keira Knightley.

rent dvd

Picked up the Rent DVD this weekend! YAY. Is it possible to love it even more on second viewing? Cause I totally do. My only problem with the movie was the lack of Benny and the DVD totally fixes that. The deleted scenes include a few with Benny, in particular one where he and Roger talk about Mimi. This scene redeems Benny in my eyes and I wish they had left it in because the movie ends without really showing us his good side. They also included the deleted performances of Halloween and Goodbye Love (*sniff* I thought this was great, especially the parts between Mark and Roger).

I also watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and March of the Penguins. Maybe it’s just me but I don’t understand the hype for either movie. Charlie had its moments (some funny and some… not so funny) but mostly I thought it was strange. And I didn’t like Willy Wonka’s flashbacks to his childhood. At all. And then, March of the Penguins. I was kinda bored. And I just don’t understand why the penguins don’t evolve so their breeding ground is closer to the water. :/

Anyway, we just got Just Like Heaven from Netflix. I’m looking forward to a fun and fluffy romantic comedy. Plus, Reese!

hp ootp casting

So it looks casting has been completed for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Hmm. The actresses cast for Luna and Tonks look *nothing* like the way I imagined the characters. I can’t really pinpoint why. I’d love to see a picture of the actress who was cast for Bellatrix Lestrange. I’ve always imagined her to be absolutely gorgeous… in an evil way, of course.

Anyway, they start filming on Monday! Yay!

reunion + crash

OMG. My domain is actually working (not sure what’s wrong exactly — my host is looking into it). But it’s too bad that I actually have nothing interesting to blog about…

Well, okay, I take that back.

I saw the movie Crash last Friday and I can’t figure out if I liked it or not. The acting was top-notch but the storyline felt a little too heavy-handed. Maybe because the racism in the movie didn’t surprise me. I’d still recommend it, though, particularly for the great performances of Sandra Bullock, Matt Dillon, Ryan Philippe, and surprisingly, Ludacris.

Was there anybody out there who watched Reunion besides me? 😛 Just in case there are more of us, I found some answers to the show’s mysteries in Kristin’s chat last week…

From anna: What were Fox prez Peter Liguori’s exact words about how Reunion would end?
He said: “Reunion was particularly cumbersome in terms of trying to provide an ending for the audience. How [creator] Jon [Harmon Feldman] was laying out the show to gap those additional 14, 15, 16 years was an incredibly complex path. There were a number of options, and he didn’t make a definitive decision on which option he was going to go with as to who the killer was, and there was just no way to accelerate that time. We put these shows on with every good intention to end them, but eventually, the audience votes. We discussed a number of options, and the best guess at that particular time was that it was going to be Sam’s daughter that was actually the killer.”

From val: What do you know about the killer?
Okay, since Liguori already spilled, and I also asked David Janollari if the WB was interested in picking up Reunion, and he said no, I think it’s time to just give up the info. Here’s what I’ve been told by someone who is very much in the know, who works on the show: The original plan was for the killer to be Sam’s daughter; however, the 11th-hour change was that the killer would be (drumroll, please) Craig’s father. I’m told he felt Craig’s political career would take off with her out of the picture. Nothing had been shot, so it could have been changed. But as far as I know (from a producer and an actor on the show), Craig’s father probably would have been the culprit. I’m also told that when the murderer was Amy, it was supposed to have been an accident.

From Jason: Please tell me you know why Craig was in a wheelchair!
It’s actually tied into the reason Jenna was so bitter toward him. Apparently, an upcoming (flashback) storyline was that Craig was hitting on Jenna in a car, and she was rebuffing him, and they got into a car accident. Initially, he really wasn’t supposed to be able to walk but had a surprising recovery. However, Craig’s father believed he’d do better with the sympathy vote and told him to stay in the wheelchair. And he won the congressional race.

From queenjacyln: If Craig’s father killed Sam, why would the five friends cover it up?
Good question. And I have no answer. I’m a bit disappointed it wasn’t one of the five friends. Aren’t you? I sorta believed that to be the premise of the whole show… but what do I know?

Reunion wasn’t exactly a great show but I wish FOX had let it finish the season off. It was meant to be a one-season show anyway. It would have been nice to have some resolution. Ah well. 🙁 It’s what I’ve come to expect from FOX anyhow.

cw network???

Disney buys Pixar.

Wow.

The WB and UPN are merging.

WHAT?!???!

It’s going to be so strange next season. I’m going to miss the WB image campaigns! I LOVED those. Seeing all the pretty people from all the different shows in one commercial. *sigh* I’ll always have a soft spot for the WB… it brought me Buffy and Dawson’s Creek, the two shows that started my obsession with TV. Good times, good times.

I just have one request for The Powers That Be. Please please please don’t cancel Everwood. Take Related (pretty much a no-brainer since it’s not doing that well ratings-wise on the WB) or even One Tree Hill instead. 🙁

serenity

EEEK. Maz and Sarah, you guys are totally right. I completely forgot Veronica Mars in my mid-season TV wrap-up below… oversight, really. I’m still watching but not with as much enthusiasm as I was over the summer when I got hooked. I don’t recognize the characters this season… I loved Veronica and Duncan last season (yes, both separately and together, as twisted as their relationship is) and now, they’re… ehh. I thought Logan and Weevil had so much potential and now Logan is an overexaggerated version of himself and Weevil barely has any screentime so who knows what he’s doing. It’s just disappointing. I had a lot of time on my hands this past weekend so I had an s1 marathon. Gawd, I devoured each disc. It was so engaging. I hope this season turns around. I *want* to love the show again!

Anyway, we recently got Netflix again so I’ve been catching movies I’ve wanted to see for some time…

Serenity
Now I know what the hype is all about. Really, really enjoyed the movie. I only watched a few episodes of Firefly when it was on the air and I have to admit that I was not impressed (being on the Friday night schedule also did not help matters). :/ I think I have the DVDs around here somewhere so I’m going to give it another chance.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
Cute, cute movie. And it totally made me cry! For some reason, though, I didn’t like Bridget at all. But in the book, I really loved her story. Maybe it was the actress? Or maybe the story about needing to feel loved just didn’t translate well on screen? Not sure. I do know that the movie totally made me want to visit Greece! One day. When I have lots of money.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Brad Pitt is HOT. (Seriously, he looks SO GOOD for his age). Angelina Jolie is HOT. I watched this movie purely to see pretty people wielding guns. It did not disappoint.

Up next is Crash

Totally random — the artwork for the Dawson’s Creek season 6 DVDs is atrocious. I mean, really.

brokeback mountain

First off, I want to say THANKS to Marianne, Sarah, Mandy, Alie, and Becca for the great holiday cards! I LOVE THEM. 🙂

My holiday cards, unfortunately, went out today. :/ I know, I’m horrible! No excuses. I just seriously procrastinated in writing and getting them mailed out. So sorry.

I saw Brokeback Mountain over the weekend (Oakland happens to be one of the limited engagement cities, yay) and I really, really liked it. It’s an extraordinarily sad story of love and how it doesn’t always conquer all. It deserves all the recognition it’s been receiving. All the principal actors (Jake Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger, Anne Hathaway, and Michelle Williams) are amazing. They all really blew me away. Is it silly that I’m so proud of Michelle Williams and her supporting actress Golden Globe nomination? It’s little Jennifer from the Creek! Aww.

I just have to get through 1 more day of work this week… then I’m off to Southern CA on Thursday morning for the holiday. 😀 Can’t wait.
